CMA CGM launches block train service in Kenya

On 28 October, CMA CGM launched its first dedicated full-block train service between the Port of Mombasa and the Nairobi-Embakasi Inland Container Depot.

The service has 54 wagons and a capacity of 108 TEU. It will initially operate once a week. CMA CGM developed the service in partnership with the Kenya Ports Authority and Kenya Railways Corporation.

In the first phase, CMA CGM will assess customer demand and explore options to increase the service frequency and introduce a return service to Mombasa.

In May, CMA CGM announced plans to invest around €700 million (US$820 million) to renovate and expand two container terminals at the Port of Mombasa. The port has two container terminals: Container Terminal 1 and Kipevu Container Terminal (CT2). Both are operated by the Kenya Ports Authority and have a combined annual handling capacity of about 2.3m TEU.

CMA CGM Group is also developing inland logistics solutions in Kenya to complement its maritime services, including the Kilima service. The group is also supporting local skills development through its renewed partnership with Bandari Maritime Academy.
