CMA CGM ship hits STS crane at TDT

A CMA CGM container ship struck an STS crane while approaching its berth at Terminal Darsena Toscana (TDT) in the Port of Livorno, Italy, on 21 October.

The 272-metre CMA CGM Pointe Noire hit an STS crane that was stationary on the quay for maintenance. The vessel’s superstructure reportedly struck the crane boom, knocking it off its rails and leaving it leaning towards the water.

No injuries were reported. Initial assessments indicated only minor damage to the ship. Authorities detained the vessel while they carried out inspections. Italian maritime authorities are investigating the incident.

The damaged crane is one of six quay cranes at TDT. According to local media reports, only two cranes were immediately available following the accident, reducing the terminal’s container-handling capacity.

CMA CGM Pointe Noire is a Malta-flagged container ship built in 2024. It has a capacity of 8,048 TEU and is deployed on CMA CGM’s GCO service. The vessel is one of a series of LNG-powered 8,000-TEU ships built by HD Hyundai Samho.

TDT began operations in 1997 and has an annual operating capacity of about 900,000 TEU. In 2025, it handled 450,281 TEU, up 18.1% from 381,198 TEU in 2024. The terminal is part of the Grimaldi Group. Grimaldi Euromed holds a 75% stake, Grimaldi Deep Sea 20%, and Compagnia Portuale di Livorno 5%. TDT operates the container terminal at the Port of Livorno under a concession.
