A worker whose age has not been disclosed died on Tuesday in an accident at a company operating at the Port of Bilbao.
The Ertzaintza, the Basque Country’s regional police force, received an alert shortly after 3 pm but did not release details of the incident.
The accident occurred at the facilities of Bergé, a logistics company founded in Bilbao in 1870 and one of Spain’s leading cargo-handling operators. The multinational employs approximately 4,500 people across nine countries. It specialises in loading and unloading a wide range of goods and supplying ships.
Emergency medical personnel attended the scene but could not save the worker. Ertzaintza officers and technicians from Osalan, the Basque Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, also attended. Osalan is investigating the circumstances of the accident.
The Bilbao Port Authority said it was gathering information about the incident but declined to comment further.
Trade unions represented at the port said they would organise protests in the coming hours to denounce the fatality.
Last year, a female worker was seriously injured after being struck by a forklift truck at the port. Following the incident, the ELA trade union and the Bilbao Port Workers’ Co-ordinating Committee called for preventive measures.
Both organisations have again called for an investigation, criticising what they described as a lack of political will to tackle workplace accidents. They warned that the port was a high-risk environment because of the machinery and materials used.
Tuesday’s fatality brings the number of deaths in workplace accidents in the region to 28 so far this year.
