On 20 October, the Port Authority of Guam announced that Gantry Crane 5 had successfully passed its load test and received conditional certification to resume cargo operations. This marks the return to service of all three STS cranes affected by the 2 October high-wind incident.
Under the conditional certification, the crane can perform stationary cargo operations but cannot travel along the dock rails under its own power. Port employees can manually reposition it along the rails as needed to support vessel operations.
The certification allows the port to use Gantry Crane 5 for cargo handling while mechanics complete additional repairs, including replacing motors needed for the crane to move independently along the rails. This enables the port to restore additional cargo-handling capacity without waiting for all mechanical work to be completed.
Gantry Crane 5 follows Gantry Crane 4, which returned to service on 5 October, and Gantry Crane 6, which returned on 14 October. All three cranes were affected when strong winds dislodged Gantry Crane 6 from its secured position on 2 October. The crane travelled along the dock and made contact with Gantry Cranes 5 and 4.
